Public Works
The Town of Mancos Public Works Department is divided into two main areas:
- They are the streets/utility distribution (water & sewer)
- water/wastewater plants operation.
Streets
Except for Main Street, and Grand Avenue, most streets in town are gravel. The Town coats the streets with mag chloride to keep the dust down. Some storm drainage has been accomplished, but the Town has been working to upgrade its system.
Snow removal is done by the Public Works Streets Crew when accumulations reach approximately four (4) inches. Removal starts around 3:30 a.m. to accommodate early risers. Colorado Department of Transportation crews plow Grand Avenue and Main Street, and Town crews plow all secondary streets. Alleys are cleared only after all primary streets are cleared first.

Water and Wastewater
The Town’s drinking water comes from the West Mancos River. Water is diverted from the river either through the Town’s diversion structure on the river, or through a supply stored at Jackson Gulch Reservoir. Current treatment capacity is one million gallons per day, and plant operation requires a Class A license. Wastewater is treated in an aerated lagoon system, then discharged back into the Mancos River downstream from the Town. Plant operation requires a Class B license. At this time the Town has been working to improve its water distribution and wastewater collection systems. This effort stems from a need to replace aging infrastructure, as well as provide adequate support for a growing population and business community.
Through engineering reports, the Town has determined the community has sufficient water supplies to allow for infill development projects. Requests for annexation of properties into our municipal boundaries will require water rights dedicated to the Town. New development applications on annexed properties will require a water sufficiency study prior to approval. See the 2024 Water Sufficiency Memo below for the Town.
